In the 1950s, Moncler was known for producing sleeping bags, tents, and other camping gear. But everything changed when an outdoor enthusiast named Lionel Terray discovered Moncler sleeping bags and began using them on his expeditions to the highest mountains in the world.

Terray, a well-known climber at the time, was impressed by the quality and warmth of Moncler sleeping bags and began recommending them to other climbers. This led to Moncler becoming well-known in climbing circles, and the company began producing outerwear and other clothing specifically designed to cope with the extreme weather conditions of the mountains.
