Born and raised in Manhattan as the daughter of two archaeologists, Ulla Johnson developed her characteristic style between the streets of New York and the distant destinations the family traveled to. Her own clothing label, Ulla Johnson, was founded in 1998 shortly after graduating from university, and immediately caught the attention of the fashion press with its exclusive aesthetic.
Bohemian luxury
Ulla Johnson has a feminine style, with wonderful details and beautiful cuts. The Dara blouse is a showpiece, and comes in 100% luxurious silk and in a signature silhouette from Ulla Johnson. All the clothes in Ulla Johnson's collections are made from the best and most natural materials and have a slightly bohemian expression, and Ulla Johnson's clothes are often referred to as "Bohemian Luxury", which is clearly shown through, among other things , the Denia dress and Alessa -the dress in the latest collection by Ulla Johnson.
Bohemian Luxury refers to a style that combines the free, eclectic and artistic nature of bohemian fashion with high quality materials and design and opulence, and that is exactly what Ulla Johnson does. Ulla Johnson blends the carefree and casual elements of the boho style with a sense of sophistication and elegance, resulting in a unique and exclusive aesthetic. This fusion creates a luxurious and individualistic look, and Ulla Johnson embraces creativity, comfort and a sense of world knowledge.
Ulla Johnson's aesthetic is thus described as freedom-loving and a wanderlust. Attracting an urbanized, bohemian bourgeois clientele, Ulla Johnson's collections are available at many of the world's most prestigious retailers, including Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus and Le Bon Marche.
Interested in fashion from an early age
Ulla Johnson is known for her dreamy collections and, like many other talented designers, has had a sense of fashion from a very young age. Ulla Johnson has said several times that as a little girl she was obsessed with fashion magazines, and that she was given a copy of Vogue by her mother every time she was sick and home from primary school. This was by no means accidental as Ulla Johnson's mother is also incredibly interested in fashion and always brought the latest fashion clothes with her from her many trips around the world's fashion capitals.
Now it is Ulla Johnson's own clothes that are being carried around to the same metropolises, as Ulla Johnson's designs have become permanent fixtures in many celebrities' wardrobes. In 2020, Ulla Johnson partnered with architect Rafael de Cárdenas to design and build the 2,100-square-foot Ulla Johnson showroom in New York City, right next to Ulla Johnson's SoHo studio.
Ulla Johnson herself lives in Brooklyn with her husband and three children, and works from Ulla Johnson's headquarters in SoHo.
Sustainability and love
For Ulla Johnson, it is incredibly important to use sustainable methods in clothing production. Among other things, Ulla Johnson has her own denim collection handmade in Los Angeles. She has stated that regardless of whether it is dresses , blouses , trousers or whatever, each and every garment and design has come into the world with large amounts of passion and love. Ulla Johnson is also engaged in philanthropic work with a focus on support for women's rights, social justice, preservation of crafts and environmental protection.
